Cikilaxʷm: Controlled Burn is a groundbreaking collaboration between three Indigenous artists—Cris Derksen (Treaty 8, Northern Alberta), Andy Moro (Euro/Omushkego Cree), and Cameron sinkʷə Fraser-Monroe (Tla'amin First Nation)—commissioned by Ballet Kelowna. This interdisciplinary performance blends contemporary dance, live music, and Indigenous storytelling to explore themes of fire, renewal, and cultural resilience.
The work draws inspiration from traditional Indigenous fire practices, such as cultural burning, which have been used for thousands of years to manage landscapes, promote biodiversity, and maintain spiritual connections to the land. These practices are now being revisited in British Columbia as a means to reduce wildfire risks and restore ecological balance.
